… getting to this point wasn’t easy.

Hi, there!  I’m Lisa, a second-career chemistry teacher for an online cyber school that serves a high population of at-risk students who are largely not college-bound.

Despite feeling confined by the inherent challenges of a virtual learning environment, I was able to completely transform the culture of my classrooms to increase student engagement and enhance rigor through a trauma-informed lens while magnifying my own sense of fulfillment and contentment in my career.

AND I WANT THE SAME FOR YOU!

When I was hired as an online, distance learning science teacher in 2010, there were no obvious options for creating “hands on” activities for students.

Every year for 9 years, I reworked my lesson plans in an effort to lead my classroom in a more innovative, engaging way.

🎥

I “flipped” my classroom.

🎨

I had students complete interactive notebooks.

💥

I performed exciting demonstrations.

until one day engagement was so bad …

😢 NOT ONE STUDENT EVEN SAID HELLO 😢

At that point, I realized three things that completely changed my teaching practice:

I’d have to let go of the conventional lecture-lab mentality, take risks, and challenge the status quo in my chemistry classrooms.

I’d have to overcome the perceived limitations of my learning environment and provide active learning opportunities to encourage authentic interest and ongoing engagement.

I’d have to stop considering myself the singular, leading content authority and, instead, adopt a mentor mentality and embrace servant leadership.

Interactive Digital Notebooks For Individual Student Distributuion

These resources are powered by the cloud-based software, BookWidgets.

Their content exactly matches that which is contained in each corresponding PowerPoint lesson file.

Teachers share active links to the lessons with students for completion, and students can download them once complete.

Default programming ensures correct answers to multiple-choice, multiple-select, and short-answer questions are highlighted to provide students with immediate feedback.

An active subscription to BookWidgets is NOT required to use these resources!

Interactive digital notebooks provide flexibility to lesson delivery in the following ways:

Students can work through the entirety of the lessons at their own pace to support differentiation.

They can be assigned as station work.

Portions can be assigned as pre-work a replacements for videos in a “flipped” classroom model.

Once a classroom routine is established, a substitute could easily distribute these to ensure minimal learning loss in your absence.

Students who miss class can easily make up the entire experience either while they are out or upon their return.

Assessment Archive

A pacing guide is provided to inform the scope and sequence of this curriculum where weekly assessments are administered in addition to unit tests.

If you work with a team where everyone must use common unit assessments, this collection can provide an additional bank of questions from which to make changes in the future.

While scored assessments are, of course, important, the lessons are designed for you to make data-informed instructional decisions DAILY.  Those artifacts of learning will likely be the most clear indicator of academic strengths and areas for improvement within and among your student body.

Frequently asked questions

Q:  I’m a new science teacher, and I’m just getting started. Will this still work for me?

A:  Absolutely!  With lessons in hand, you’ll be able to focus squarely on improving your servant leadership skills and other student-centered delivery techniques.  And, if you enroll soon, you’ll benefit enormously from all the professional development contained in the bonus offer.

Q: I’ve been teaching with inquiry-based approaches for years. How EXACTLY is this curriculum different?

A: With inquiry-based teaching experience, you’ll know how to support your students through seeking their own answers to guided or self-generated questions.  With this curriculum, you’ll be able to provide those experiences EACH AND EVERY DAY by leaning on simulations, interactive tutorials, videos, text, or other activities made possible by technology.

Q: Is this curriculum aligned to NGSS or specific state standards?

A: Traditional standards serve as a guideline for WHAT content should be taught under specific content umbrellas.  The NGSS attempts to frame content standards in a way that also guides HOW content should be taught with emphasis on constructivist pedagogies (i.e. problem-based, project-based, collaborative, inquiry-based, etc.).  This curriculum contains all critical chemistry content for the middle school level through the introductory college level.  The lessons are built with the goal of delivering 3-dimensional, active learning.  They are not designed to align to a single, specific standard set.

Q: Do I need to follow the lessons in a specific order or can I skip around to follow a sequence more familiar to me?

A:  Each PowerPoint file is designed to deliver independently, mostly on a single day.  As such, they can be delivered in any order.  Naturally, since the “Review & Preview” portion does call upon prior knowledge, diverging from the recommended sequence might disrupt your ability to deliver that warmup with consistency.  Also, it’s important to note that the curriculum was designed to spiral, to introduce foundational concepts related to matter and energy at the beginning of the course and continually call upon them, routinely reviewing them, as the year progresses.  Doing so also provides time for your students to adjust to a new style of learning before launching into more challenging chemistry concepts.  If the recommended sequence is not followed, it’s possible some of this effect will be compromised.

Q: Do I need an active BookWidget subscription to use the digital notebooks with my students?

A:  NO!  If you are happy to use them as-is, the digital notebook links can be shared directly with students for access and completion.  You would require an active BookWidgets subscription only if you desire to edit the digital notebooks or collect them digitally and automatically score them.  In that case, you’d also require special access to add the digital notebooks to your personal BookWidgets account.  This can be purchased at an additional charge upon checkout or at a later time.

Q: How much support is included?

A:  When you drop your question in the members-only community feed or send it specifically to me in the live chat or email, you can expect a written answer from me within 24 hours, Monday-Friday!  Ultimately, however, it’s my hope that the entire community of chemistry teachers using this curriculum product with ask questions and exchange ideas on an ongoing basis, deepening the degree of support everyone will receive at any time.

Q: When will I get access?

A: You will receive an email with all the details immediately after your purchase and should be able to access the currently available content and community immediately.  REMEMBER!  The 20-minute prep support videos and the Assessment Archive are being added daily.  All promised content for the entire year will be available by September 2, 2023.

Q: How does the pricing work?

A: This curriculum and community invitation is being offered for a ONE-TIME FEE of $497.  This represents only 30% of the value of the complete system when purchased separately.  However, to make this even more accessible, two other payment plans are offered, $55/month for 12 months and $97/month for 6 months.  If a payment plan is chosen, the promise to pay each installment is implied.

Q: Can I cancel and get a refund if I change my mind?

A: You may cancel and request a refund within 7 days of your purchase, no questions asked.  If a payment plan is chosen and a refund is requested after the initial 7-day refund window, it is expected that the remaining balance (or number of months) will be paid in full.
