You’re tired of preaching from the podium.

BUT FIGURING OUT HOW TO HELP STUDENTS UNCOVER COMPLEX CONCEPTS THEMSELVES SEEMS LIKE AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK.

You’re tired of preaching from the podium.

BUT FIGURING OUT HOW TO HELP STUDENTS UNCOVER COMPLEX CONCEPTS THEMSELVES SEEMS LIKE AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK.

Exploring takes more time than explaining, and time is never on your side.

Cooperation and communication among students can quickly lead to classroom chaos, and quiet students are much more managable.

Tools and tangibles are expensive, and your school won’t subsidize the spending.

More student work means more scoring, and you need to protect your personal time.

Equality in education is important to you, and differentiating daily activities feels way too daunting.

Fifteen years years ago, teaching my students how to discover their own new knowledge was my dream.

Year after year, I would try a new, standalone strategy.

But those single strategies never addressed all the challenges to achieving active learning everyday.

And, they always led back to lecture.

The Flipped Classroom

Teachers pre-record their lectures, share them on the web, and assign them for homework as content students work through on their own outside the classroom.

TIME

  • With lecture out of the way, there’s lots of time for application, practice, teamwork, and lots of teacher feedback.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

  • Ensuring students actually watch the videos for homework can be hit-or-miss.
  • Activities still need to be planned for and executed during classtime to make that pre-work worthwhile.

COST

  • Teachers might have to invest a small amount in video editing software and training to provide lecture content that was free for everyone before.
  • The tools and tangibles to use during freed up class time might still be costly.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE

  • The first year might be a beast when it comes to prep.  Presentations need to be clear, concise, filled with content, and prevent students from catching a nap while they watch!

DIFFERENTIATION

  • This approach serves the strengths of students with above-average and advanced abilities, but easily could leave average and at-risk students avoiding it entirely because they feel fearful of doing it alone.

Interactive Notebooks

Teachers distribute paper notebooks with lots of flaps and pop-outs so that documenting facts and figures is fun and making models is managable.

Digital versions contain lots of links to keep students clicking.

TIME

  • Students learn while doing, since they usually complete this classwork during lecture as part of learning or following lecture as formative assessment.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

  • Lots of page-folding and coloring could create unintended distractions.  By design, this strategy is about learning to organize content for recall, not uncovering core ideas.

COST

  • DIY is totally doable, but low cost options are available for sale from popular teacher marketplaces.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE

  • With a commitment to using them consistently, count on spending some time scoring these.  Even a relaxing review will take a little while because there are just so many pages to poke through.

DIFFERENTIATION

  • These resources are adaptable enough to make multiple versions, but that might take some extra time and effort to satisfy specific accomodations.

Demonstrations

Teachers attempt to inspire awe and interest by showing real-life renditions of science in action

TIME

  • Students are supposed to learn while watching, and a skilled teacher who’s prepped properly won’t run into too many problems.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

  • Students don’t actually do anything with the system they’re studying.  They passively watch and listen.  Though communication through conversation would be a wonderful outcome, there are limitations to making outstanding observations which might leave students struggling to make suggestions about the system.

COST

  • Demonstrations at higher grade levels can’t be conducted with simple dollar store devices, and committing to consistency everyday will up the ante.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE

  • To properly prep and clean up everyday, extra early mornings and extended afternoons might have to become a habit.  PLUS, resetting the tools and tangibles between classes will take some time, too.

DIFFERENTIATION

  • Since this strategy is passive and not at all active, there’s nothing to modify.  Students who don’t understand are just left to struggle.

These and other standalone strategies will never fulfill all our needs as we seek to increase engagement and achievement in our classrooms.

For that, only a STRONG, STRATEGIC SYSTEM will do the trick.

THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT & COLLABORATE

Shortly after I decided that what I was working on could make a difference beyond the boundaries of my own classroom, I became determined to find a private platform online that could both allow me to share my knowledge and experience AND enable other teachers to do the same.

All my programs exist within a gated software system — with full mobile functionality — called Mighty Networks.  There, all participants can connect with me and with each other to work through our struggles and celebrate our successes.

A MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP that you can cancel at any time to accommodate your personal and professional needs as they change from month-to-month and year-to-year

A SELF-STUDY PACKAGE with the option to generate and participate in active discussion and potential problem-solving around your specific classroom concerns or challenges

PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING to get questions answered, resources reviewed, suggestions when things don’t go as planned, and encouragement when you need it

a live, cohort-based professional development series

a package prepared by a PhD professor of educational research or an administrator who hasn’t led a K-12 classroom in years

Are you one of the TWO TYPES of secondary science teachers it was designed for?

the science teacher who wants to empower students to take ownership of their own learning and actively mentor them in that effort but worries they’ll burn out before they break through

the science teacher who feels stuck, bored, and longs for deeper fulfillment in their career, who desires to shift from lecturing everyday to leading lab everyday but can’t imagine a sustainable solution to make that happen

Using this system, I created a curriculum that …

I LOVE TO TEACH

IS EASILY DIFFERENTIATED

SPARKS STUDENT INTEREST IN SCIENCE

This approach has transformed me into the teacher I’ve always wanted to be, the one who has happy students who’ve built their confidence through comfortable struggle and unrelenting support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this program about learning to teach using NGSS?

The Next Generation Science Standards outline a 3-dimensional approach to teaching and learning according to which students should use science skills to learn science concepts through the lens of phenomena they can witness in our macroscopic world.

I use the system of strategies in this program to prepare complete lessons for my own students in my own classroom, and I not yet required to comply with NGSS.  I created this approach with student engagement and achievement in mind, not the beaurocracy of a complex, ill-managed education system.

If you are required to meet these expectations, the training and tools provided in this system will support your planning and prep for direct instruction.

What grade level does this approach work best for?

I teach high school chemistry and plan to, in time, create a curriculum for biology and physics, as well.

Activities can be easily differentiated for special needs or honors-level students, and guidance describing how to accomodate all students is included in this system.

State standards and teacher expectations are moving toward more student activity and overall ownership of learning at every grade level.

The sooner students learn and begin practicing science skills, the more proficient they will be by the time they graduate!

However, the technology resources I’m most familiar with online are intended for students in middle and high school.  Elementary teachers may need to spend some additional time searching for student-controlled resources like simulations.

I'm a new science teacher. Is this for beginners?

The sooner science teachers can adopt student-centered, inquiry-based strategies that require more focused, thoughtful action the better!

By starting with this approach early in your career, you’re less likely to feel bored and burnout … instead, you might wake up feeling excited to go to work and content in the knowledge that you’re commitment is creating true life-long learners.

I'm a veteran teacher. Could this really help me?

This program includes the exact process I used as I prepared to transition my online science classroom to a student-centered culture with active learning practices … and that was after 9 years of working with the traditional, lecture-lab mindset!

If you know what you want to accomplish but you don’t how or you haven’t been successful yet, this program will be very helpful to begin the process of change.

I’m teaching multiple preps this year. Does it take long to create this system?

The beating heart of every lesson I deliver is an inquiry-based activity designed using the Active Learning Action Plan included in this sytem.  It takes me about 1 hour to create the activity, an additional 1 hour to build out the other parts of the lesson, and a little more time to tech it out for sharing with students.

Like any new endeavor, you should realize it may take time to become fluent.  You and I probably work differently, lead within different content areas, have different degrees of content area expertise, and aim to achieve different depths of knowledge with our student groups.

While the time it takes to create lessons packed with inquiry and action will vary from teacher to teacher, if you want to create an entire curriculum that you can deliver with consistency, I would allow yourself the grace of an entire school year to start up and tweak your new system.

THEN, you’ll go into the next year with your very own easy button!  You’ll be able to focus even more on deepening the relationships with your students and making changes that better serve them.  You’ll be able to use your new system for a very long time … even on your days off!!

The tools and training in this program , as well as the personalized support, are designed to make your experience more enjoyable, less frustrating, and FASTER to implement!

How much support is included?
When you drop your question in the private community feed, you can expect a written answer from me within 24 hours, Monday-Friday.  Other teachers may also reply with their ideas and answers to your questions.

More focused feedback and dedicated support including personalized analaysis and reviews of your work will be provided using video screenshare software and may take up to 3 days to return.

What if I feel overwhelmed by the content? Can I come and go into and out of the membership as I implement various parts?

I’m all about value, and I’ve prepared the content in this program to ensure teachers have everything they need to accomplish their goals.

But, you might find that in focusing on delivery of your lessons, you need less guidance and support.  Or, once you learn the nuances of the technology I recommend and feel confident working with it, you’ll want to step away from The Studio to focus on building that library of tools for your students.

While I hope that interacting with the community of science teachers will, alone, make this membership worth your time and money, I totally understand that life happens and our focus shifts.  You can pause your membership at any time — OR — you can cancel and return at a later date.

I’ll keep you on my email list and be sure to let you know about additions to the content and support in The Studio in response to needs of those working within it.

What if I'm not happy with my purchase?

If — FOR ANY REASON — you are not satisfied with your experience within the Studio, just email me at lisa@labineverylesson.com within the first 30 days and I’ll happily issue you a full refund … NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

I've already purchased the Active Learning Action Plan and/or the L.E.A.D. in Science PD Package. Can I get a refund for those products if I join this membership?

Both the Active Learning Action Plan and the L.E.A.D. in Science PD Package, while included as part of this comprehensive strategic system, are individual products that come with forever access to the training and tools contained within them.  For this reason, I make them available for individual sale.

The Digital Instructional Design Studio integrates these products into a strategic system so that making meaningful moments for students is more managable for teachersIt also includes an advanced level of support to ensure execution is as effortless as possible.  It is a unique opportunity, so it is a separate offer.

No refunds will be issued on the Active Learning Action Plan or the L.E.A.D. in Science PD Package because a teacher upgrades to a monthly or annual membership in the Digital Instructional Design Studio.
